Ministers Letter
Dear friends,
In February we find ourselves hoping for better weather and longer, lighter days, but we are realistic enough to know that this is often the most ‘down’ time of year in all sorts of ways. It’s the traditional time for planning those long, hot summer holidays, or poring over the seed catalogues and planning our summer gardens. We look for anything to cheer us up. Just as well, then, that we can look for snowdrops and the earliest daffodils outside. And, if all else fails, we can remind ourselves that it is not a leap year, so at least the month will be mercifully short.
It’s February weather out there in the wider world too. There is so much to be anxious about, so much to regret in our dealings with one another and so much to feel powerless about, like the ongoing plight of the people of Haiti. Looking for signs of hope, for new life and growth can be about as unproductive as looking out at our bleak back gardens.
It’s not for nothing that the first Christians in these northern isles settled on February and March for the Lent fast and the Easter celebration. If we are going to be cold and miserable anyway, if food is going to be scarce anyway, as it would have been back then in the 5th and 6th Centuries, then the Christian missionaries could use what was missing and being missed to help people understand and appreciate the warmth and light and growth that the Risen Christ makes possible in the lives of all those who turned to him.
Wouldn’t it be good to use Lent this year in a disciplined and thoughtful way to help us focus on the sacrificial, life-giving life-style that Jesus calls his friends to? We are sure to be able to see some green shoots of resurrection life by Easter!
One way would be to use Fairtrade Fortnight. 22nd Feb - 7th March, to help us spread life-giving shopping habits in our church and local communities. Not fasting, but swapping...Watch out for ways you can join in...
The Big Swap. For two whole weeks we'll be asking you to swap your usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff. Your usual bananas for Fairtrade bananas, your usual cotton socks for Fairtrade cotton socks, and your usual cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa. This means that every time you go shopping, you can use your wallet to make a stand. We need lots of swaps made. One million and one in fact. Every swap will be proof that the people of the UK want producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal.
with love,
Janet

Christians Together in Radcliffe will again be organising Lenten Meetings starting in the week beginning Monday 22nd February
When I survey ... Christ's cross and ours
The death of Christ is a dominant and dramatic theme in the New Testament; over the centuries, the Cross has become the symbol of the Christian faith. But we do not honour a dead hero; we worship a Living Lord.
According to the Bible, the death of Jesus is not the end of a track – it’s the gateway into life. His crucifixion gives rise to many key themes and we’ll explore some of these in this 5 week course
Session 1 – Darkness at Noon
Session 2 - Into Great Silence
Session 3 - The Child on the Cross
Session 4 - Outside a City Wall
Session 5 - Touching the Rock
Contributors to the course are;-
John Bell- sacred music specialist from the Iona Community and broadcaster,
General Sir Richard Dannatt, former chief of the general Staff
Dr Christina Baxter, Principal of St John’s College, Nottingham,
Dr David Hope, former Archbishop of York and
Colin Morris, head of religious broadcasting BBC and former President of the Methodist Conference.
The meetings are designed so that those in regular house groups can meet others during Lent, but it is also an opportunity for those not in house groups to share this experience. The sessions are self-contained, so you may be able attend for some of the meetings, and a number of people have found them a great way to meet other Christians in the village. Forms are available in church from Sunday 24th January, and they should be returned on or by Sunday 7th February. Please give as wide a choice of times that you could attend as you can. A ‘review’ meeting open to all whether involved in the meetings or not, will be held at 3.00pm Sunday 5th April.
· Carols in the Village with the Salvation Army band was again well attended in spite of the cold, back at the Grange,
· The Service to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will have been held by the time you read this, but a reminder that this year sees the centenary of the modern ecumenical movement, started in Scotland in 1910.
· Help with the distribution of Christmas Cards to the village was much appreciated; almost all the cards were taken by the first Sunday they were available.
West Bridgford Faith & Light
A Celebration of Candlemass At West Bridgford Methodist Church on Sunday 7th February
Time- Assemble from 2.30 - Service 3.00
COME AND JOIN THE CELEBRATION!
Women's World Day of Prayer.
This year's service has been prepared by Christian women of Cameroon. Cameroonian woman are involved in the struggle for peace, justice and integrity. Equal rights for inheritance, credit and employment are in tbe constitution of 1983, however, the right of tradition often discriminates against women. Only male heads of households have land rights. Socially, the place of a woman is still influenced by patriarchal tendencies. Women have made and continue to make great efforts at all levels in Cameroon. They assist leprosy, HIV and AIDS patients. Many women are involved in small businesses, farming and common initiative groups. Malaria, poverty, malnutrition child trafficking, diffculties in delivering education are all of great concern to these women.
Despite all these concerns their response is "Let Everything That Has Breath Praise God" which is the theme of this year's service.
Women's World Day of Prayer Services are held all over the world and will take place on Friday 5th March 2010. In Radcliffe we shall be joining members of all the churches at St Ann's Catholic Church at 2.00pm. All are welcome!
